Abstract

1,147,570. Sailing ship keels. D. J. GRIFFIN. 19 Sept., 1967, No. 42546/67. Heading B7S. A sailing vessel is provided with a keel 14 pivotally mounted on the vessel at two or more positions, spaced in the fore and aft direction of the vessel by means which may comprise two or more separate pivotal mountings 10, and adapted to be held in its operative sailing position (as in Fig. 1) by adjustable retaining means 5 arranged to bear on the keel and oppose pivoting movement thereof in a direction transverse to the fore and aft axis of the vessel. In the embodiment shown the retaining means 5 comprises a pair of plates which can be lowered into, and held in, a position in which the keel 14 is sandwiched between the plates and raised from this position to release the keel for movement about the pivots 10 into a position in which it extends laterally from the hull, facilitating transport of the vessel by land. The keel is normally prevented from sliding off the pivots towards the stern by a stop member 4 which breaks when the keel strikes the bottom when the vessel is sailing in shallow waters. The keel may be drawn off the pivots by a rope 110 attached to the keel.
