A rear-view mirror for a motor vehicle, comprises a foot member securable to the vehicle coachwork and supporting a tapered housing which carries a mirror glass and which is slidable under impact relatively to the foot member in the longitudinal plane passing symmetrically through the foot member and through the geometrical centres of the ends of the housing. In an embodiment, Fig. 1, the tapered housing 2 has a rib 9 having a longitudinal slot 10 and engaging in a groove 34 in the foot member 1, a retainer bolt 5 extending through the short arm of a lever 25 engaged by a return spring 27, and through the housing slot 10, a slot 11, a washer 37, a rubber element 6, a washer 7, and an adjuster nut 8. In Fig. 2 (not shown), the foot member is screwed from the outside on to the coachwork, and has a part-spherical recess receiving a part-spherical member to form a universal joint whereby the orientation of the mirror glass carried directly in the housing is adjusted, the retainer bolt extending through the part-spherical member which has the groove therein, a spring being carried on the bolt. In Fig. 3 (not shown), the retainer bolt and the spring thereon are arranged so that the housing can be tilted to either side of the foot member. In Figs. 4, 5 (not shown), a portion of the foot member extends into a coachwork recess, and the slot for the bolt is formed in the foot member, a roller on the housing locating in one of the locating recesses of the slot. The housing is releasable from the foot member.
