Abstract

1,145,564. Preparation of thermoplastic copolymers. BECK KOLLER & CO., (ENGLAND), Ltd. 18 March, 1966 [3 July, 1965], No. 12122/66. Heading C3P. Thermoplastic copolymers are prepared by polymerizing in an organic solvent in the presence of a polymerization initiator a monomer mixture comprising (a) 10-50% by weight of a vinyl ester of the formula where R 3 and R 4 each represents H, methyl, ethyl, propyl, butyl or phenyl and n is an integer from 1 to 17 (with the provision that the viynl ester does not contain more than 91 carbon atoms), (b) 0-6% by weight of an α,#-ethylenically unsaturated mono-, di- and/or polycarboxylic acid or a partial ester of such a di- or poly-basic acid with a C 1 -C 8 alkanol, (c) 20-50% by weight of methyl methacrylate, (d) 20-50% by weight of a C 4 -C 18 -alkyl acrylate and (e) 5-20% by weight of a hydroxyalkyl or hydroxyaralkyl ester of an α,#-ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid. Component (b) may be acrylic, methacrylic, ethacrylic, α-phenylacrylic, maleic, fumaric, itaconic, citraconio or crotonic acid or an appropriate mono-ester of an aforementioned dicarboxylic acid. Component (e) may also be derived from an aforementioned acid. The vinyl ester (a) is preferably an ester of Versatic acid-911 (the word "Versatic" is a registered Trade Mark). Polymerization solvents specified are xylene, toluene, butanol, ketones, glycol esters and glycol ethers. Polymerization initiators specified are benzoyl peroxide, di-t-butyl peroxide, tbutyl hydroperoxide, cumene hydroperoxide and azodiisobutyronitrile. A chain transfer agent may also be present, e.g. butyl or lauryl mercaptan or thioglycolic acid. The copolymers can be used to form coatings on various substrates, particularly when in combination with a condensation resin; the coatings can be stored by heating to 100-200‹ C. (Compositions containing such copolymers in combination with aminoplast resins form the invention of Specification 1,087,623).
