Abstract

1,145,139. Testing sparking plugs. T. NAKAGAWA. Nov. 8, 1967 [Nov. 14, 1966; Sept. 13, 1967], No.50845/67. Heading G1U. In measuring the gap 6 of a sparking plug 5 a high D. C. voltage is fed to a capacitor 18 in parallel with the sparking plug and the average value of the pulsating voltage produced across the capacitor by the sparking of the plug gives an indication of the gap length. The average value of the voltage is measured by a meter 7 and the high D. C. voltage is obtained from a rectifier 17 supplied by a high frequency oscillator and transformer 9,11,12,13. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the transistors 22, 25 feeding the meter 7 are omitted, the valve rectifier 17 is replaced by a capacitor semi-conductor voltage doubler, and the meter 7, shunted by a thermistor (39) to compensate for ambient temperature variations is connected in series with a resistor (38) across the terminal of capacitor 18. The voltage supply to the h. f. oscillator may be measured by closing switches (8 2 , 37 2 ) which connect the meter 7 in series with a resistor (41) across the terminals (1, 2) on the input side of the oscillator.
