Abstract

1,145,041. Packings for contact heat exchangers. C. G. MUNTERS. 2 March, 1966 [2 March, 1965], No 9354/66 Heading F4K. [Also in Division B1] A packing body for a contact apparatus in which heat and/or moisture is exchanged between two fluids, at least one of which is a gas, is made of corrugated layers of fibrous material such as asbestos arranged to form gas flow passages therebetween, the so-formed body being then wetted with an aqueous solution of water glass, dried by extraction of the water by means of an absorbing liquid such as alcohol, acetone or strong brine and treated with an aqueous solution, preferably heated, of a salt such as aluminium or magnesium chloride to convert the water glass in the packing to an insoluble silicate. The packing is said to be suitable for use in a cooling tower in which air is brought into contact with a liquid such as water; and also for use in apparatus for heat exchange between two gases, e.g. two air streams of different thermodynamic states.
