Abstract

In a machine for printing sales data &c. on a near-vertically disposed sales form the printing operation is automatically effected by motor driven means after a pivoted head carrying the form and the printing surfaces is swung into position adjacent one face of the machine. As shown the machine is roughly cubical in shape and the head 104-spring-loaded into its open position-forms one face thereof. The box part of the machine houses an electric motor 28 and lever linkage means by which the motor is actuated on closure of the head. A platen roller P is loosely mounted on a spindle F2 parallel with the plane of the closed head, Fig. 3, and this roller may be readily removed by pulling the upper end of the spindle 72 forward away from its mounting. In operation, projections 136, 137 at each side of the head move outwardly as the latter is manually closed into operative position about a spindle 154 and in so doing release a latch mechanism such that a motor switch energizes the motor 28. The platen roller is then driven across the head during a printing stroke to a position where an abutment on the lower limb of the U-shaped arm carrying the roller engages a trip mechanism which releases the head allowing it to spring back to its open position. The motor is not de-energized however and continues to operate thus returning the platen to its original position where a further trip mechanism is actuated to shut the machine down. The platen roller may be of the selfinking type or carbon paper may be inserted between the printing surfaces and the form. The printing surfaces comprise a fixed printing plate, a dating device and a customer's card. The latter is readily removable a spring-loaded mouse trap type U-shaped bar being used to hold it in position on the head.
