Abstract

1,144,841. Measuring acceleration electrically. GENERAL PRECISION SYSTEMS Inc. Aug.18, 1966, No. 37094/66. Heading G1N. A vibrating wire accelerometer comprises two similar wire assemblies caused to vibrate at their natural frequencies, supported coaxially by inertia masses, whereby acceleration in the axial direction produces a differential change in vibration frequencies which is indicative of acceleration. As shown Fig. 2, two inertial masses 28, 30 are supported centrally by metal strips 32, 34 in a cylindrical housing 22. One pair of ferromagnetic tines 40 is supported between mass 28 and the housing end-face 24, and a second pair of tines 42 between mass 30 and the other end-face 26. Driving coil 60 and pick-up coils 64, 66 are associated with tines 40 in an amplifier circuit 80 Fig. 4 so that the tines vibrate at their resonant frequency Wo, a similar circuit being associated with tines 42. When the assembly is subjected to an axial acceleration the tensions in the tines vary differentially to charge the frequencies to W 1 and W 2 , and these are mixed at 84 to give (W 1 + W 2 ) and (W 1 - W 2 which are multiplied together at 96 to give (W 1 <SP>2</SP> - W 2 <SP>2</SP>), which is proportional to the applied acceleration. In another embodiment Figs. 5-10 (not shown), only one pair of tines may be used, made of goldplated quartz and vibrated electrostatically.
