Abstract
1,144,788. Ball-point pen cartridge. PAPER MATE MFG. CO. 17 Oct., 1966 [20 Oct., 1965], No. 46384/66. Heading B6P. The follower assembly for a ball-point pen reservoir comprises a tubular element 20 made of thermoplastic or thermosetting resinous compositions such as polyethylene, polyvinyl, polyamide or polystyrene. In contact with the top of the ink column 30, surrounding the element 20 and in the bore 21 thereof is a grease 28, which may be composed of an oleoginous component (non- drying viscous oil or silicone) with or without a soap or thickening agent, such as a colloidal material or salt of a fatty acid (such as aluminium stearate or zinc stearate). Other additives such as oxidation inhibitors, colloidal fillers and gel formers may be present. When, after use, the ink column has diminished as far as the constriction 17 in the reservoir, the tubular element 20 is halted. However, the plug of grease in the bore 21 continues to move down the narrow portion 13 of the reservoir as the ink is used (Fig. 3). In a modification (Fig. 4), another plastics element (23) in the form of a smoothsurfaced solid cylinder or pin is provided in the bore 21 of the element 20. When the element 20 reaches the reservoir constriction 17, the pin (23) surrounded by grease 28 descends into the narrow reservoir portion 13.
