Abstract

1,142,201. Refractory compositions. R. & D. POLYMERS Ltd. 9 Feb., 1966 [19 Feb., 1965], No. 7354/65. Heading C1J. A refractory composition comprises 100 parts by wt. of alumina, mullite, refractory alumino-silicate, SiC, ZrSiO 4 or ZrO 2 , 1 to 6 parts of a water-soluble Al and Cl-containing binder and 2 to 10 parts of an activator comprising α-Al 2 O 3 of surface area greater than 5,000 cm<SP>2</SP>g<SP>-1</SP>. The refractory material is preferably a high purity, graded, alumina or mullite and the binder is preferably a basic aluminium chloride with a Cl : Al atomic ratio of 0À5 to 1À0. The activator is preferably incorporated into a solution of the binder which is then mixed with the refractory material e.g. by milling.
