Abstract

1,142,037. Magnetron oscillators. S-F-D LABORATORIES Inc. 21 Sept., 1966 [19 Oct., 1965], No. 42194/66. Heading H1D. Slot-mode resonance in a multi-cavity magnetron is prevented by a suppressor arranged adjacent to the slots, the suppressor comprising a lossy member having a metallic sleeve bonded to it on the side remote from the slots. As shown, the magnetron comprises radial vanes 52 surrounding a cathode 59 and defining a circular array of resonant cavities. These are coupled to an annular cavity 51 by means of a circular array of axially-directed slots 53. The unwanted slot mode is suppressed by means of an annular member 55 consisting of carbon-impregnated alumina or beryllia having one surface metallized with a mixture of manganese, titanium, molybdenum or tungsten. This surface is brazed to a copper sleeve 61 which is in turn brazed to the polepiece 57 of the magnetron. Modifications are described in which: (a) the sleeve 61 fills the whole space between the member 55 and the polepiece, (b) the member 55 is brazed directly to the polepiece. The invention may be applied to the type of magnetron having an annular cathode adjacent to an annular array of resonators which surrounds a central cylindrical cavity (Fig. 2, not shown). This is tuned by means of a disc supported on the end of an axially movable plunger. The output comprises an axiallydirected waveguide.
