Abstract

1,141,901. Welding by pressure; making bearing rings. TORRINGTON MFG. CO. 25 April, 1966 [22 July, 1965], No. 17898/66. Headings B3A and B3R. A method of making welded articles, particularly bearing races, formed at least in part from high carbon steel of carbon content exceeding 0À4%, comprises the steps of arranging end portions in closely adjoining relationship, electrically preheating the articles) while maintaining the ends relatively cool, urging the ends together and resistance welding them together, the welding step being commenced within one second of termination of the preheating step, and the heating and welding processes being carried out so that the temperature of the whole article is raised above the level at which austenite transforms to martensite and so that the formation of localized areas of martensite is prevented. Bearing races are formed by the steps of severing a suitable blank from strip material, forming the strip into an open hoop and chamfering the ends 18, 20 of the strip, applying an electric current to the open blank which flowing round the hoop and not through the weld areas raises the temperature of the body of the article to a level preferably about 100‹ F. above the upper transformation temperature, urging the ends together to effect a resistance weld and cooling the article by air cooling or quenching. The invention is applicable to lap or spot welds of articles other than closed loop articles.
