Abstract

1,141,746. Desulphurizing hydrocarbons. ESSO RESEARCH & ENG. CO. 17 April. 1967, No. 17447/67. Heading C5E. A process for desulphurizing hydrocarbons comprises contacting them, in the liquid phase, with a metal hydroxide selected from cobalt hydroxide, manganese hydroxide, hydrous manganese oxide and mixtures thereof, the weight ratio of hydroxide to hydrocarbon being from 0À1: 1 to 2À0: 1, and recovering a hydrocarbon with a reduced sulphur content. The process is applicable to petroleum fractions, more especially those boiling above 900‹ F. The metal sulphide formed may be re-converted to hydroxide.
