Abstract

1,141,671. Preparation of #-cyanoalkanoic acids. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 4 Jan., 1967 [27 Jan., 1966], No. 3759/66. Heading C2C. #-Cyanoalkanoic acids are prepared by hydroformylating an α,#-alkenonitrile by heating with CO and H 2 under pressure in the presence of a hydroformylation catalyst, isolating the aldehyde formed and oxidizing it. The hydroformylation is preferably carried out at 20‹ to 200‹ C. under a pressure of 70-200 atmospheres. Preferred catalysts are rhodium (I) planar complexes, e.g. tetracarbonyl-Á- dirhodium dichloride. In the example 1-cyano- 4-pentene is hydroformylated using the catalyst specified above to yield a 6-cyano-hexanal product (2,4 - dinitrophenyl - hydrazone formed) which is oxidized with KMnO 4 /H 2 SO 4 to give 6-cyanohexanoic acid.
