Abstract

1,141,670. Extruding multilayer tubes. DOW CHEMICAL CO. 22 Dec., 1967, No. 58461/67. Heading B5A. An extrusion die has a central cylindrical passage optionally containing a cylindrical mandrel and at least a first and second annular plenum connected to the central passage by a circular channel and to a supply of extrudable material; the circular channels are defined by the die housing and an adjustable hollow cylindrical bushing so that the size of the circular channel can be adjusted. As shown, a die for extruding a three layer tube comprises a die 10 and an extrusion passage defined by cylindrical passage 12 and mandrel 55 feeding an extrusion orifice 56. Three circular plenums 18, 31, 50, are fed from extruders 20, 34, 51 and communicate with the central passage by circular channels 30, 46, 53. The central channel 53 has fixed dimensions and the size of the other channels 30, 46 can be varied by movement of a hollow bushing 21, 36 threaded into the block. The mandrel contains a wider portion at its upper end which fills the bore of the upper bushing 21 and is rigidly maintained in place by a member 58 integral with the die block.
