Abstract
1,141,178. Filament treating apparatus. FIBREGLASS Ltd. 3 Oct., 1967 [26 Aug., 1966], No. 38332/66. Heading D1L. An applicator for sizing filaments comprises a container for the size built up of sections 1 and 2 having at one end thereof inner and outer segments 7 and 11 slightly spaced from each other (in the embodiment shown this is achieved by closing section 2 which is hinged at 3) so that filaments can pass through the gap between them, a weir in the upper segment (in this case the upper edge of segment 7) over which the size may flow into the gap, and means, e.g. overflow pipe 16, for maintaining a steady flow of size over the weir. The segments may be of graphite or metal covered by an absorbent pad, and suitably are provided with the inclined surfaces 8, 12 and 17. These segments fit into the recesses 5, 10 in the sections 1, 2. A duct may be cut through the wall of section 2 (Fig. 1, not shown) which is bounded by downwardly inclined surfaces (18, 19, 20), to convey away the draught of air associated with the rapidly moving filaments, which may be of glass. This operation may be assisted by auxilliary air jets (J) and suction.
