Abstract
1,140,888. Filling and sealing containers. COMPLETE PACKAGING SERVICES (PTY) Ltd. 11 May, 1966 [14 April, 1965], No. 20784/66. Headings B8C and B8T. Rows of containers 15 to be filled and sealed are carried in cups 14 mounted on cross-bars (13), Fig. 1, between two parallel chains 8, and conveyed intermittently beneath first nozzles 67 which partially fill them, and second nozzles 68 which complete the filling, the space between the nozzles allowing for any froth to settle, and an air line 61 then dispersing any froth formed after the second filling, any spillage being collected in tray 127 which drains into tank 128. The containers then pass beneath heaters 66 which heat the container mouths prior to them being nipped together by sealing jaws 94, 95. The chains 8 run on free sprockets 9, and sprockets 10 driven by means of a reciprocating pawl 20 engaging a ratchet wheel 17 mounted with the sprocket 10. A pawl 27 prevents reverse motion of the ratchet wheel. Filling.-The nozzles are fed from a tank 31 via valves 29, 30. Each valve (29), (30), Figs. 3 and 4, comprises a horizontal cylinder (35) in which slides a spring-loaded piston (36) carrying a roller (37) which abuts a bar (38) connected by links (40), (42), to a first order lever 44 carrying a roller 47 which runs on a cam 48. On revolving the cam, the pistons are thus driven in the cylinders from a closed to an open position to connect the tank (31) to the nozzles (67), (68). The revolving of the cam is co-ordinated with the driving of the chains 8 so that the nozzles will only dispense when the containers are stationary. The length of time of dispensing is determined by the adjustable cam 48. Means (73), (74) are provided to detect the presence of a container in position, to allow filling. Levers (105) are provided to prevent filling by one or all of nozzles (68) when the filling may be performed completely by nozzles (67). When liquids undergoing fermentation are used, a knife arrangement may be provided on one or both jaws 94, 95 to penetrate the body of a container to provide a " breathing " aperture. In an alternative filling and sealing machine, Fig. 6, the containers are carried in a single line in cups (121) mounted on a horizontal endless chain (110).
