[Also in Division A5] Novel laotones of the formula where R 1 is C 1-7 alkyl, R<SP>3</SP> is H, halogen or C 1-7 alkyl and X represents O or S and the phosphorus-containing group is attached either (a) to the #-lactone position in which case Y is O or S and R<SP>2</SP> is alkenyl, branched-chain alkyl, aralkyl or cycloalkyl, or (b) to the α-lactone position in which case R<SP>2</SP>Y together represents a heterocyclic or arylamino group with N directly attached to P, or Y is O or S and R<SP>2</SP> is alkenyl, aralkenyl, haloalkenyl, aryl, aralkyl, halo- or methoxy-aralkyl, heterocyolic alkyl, alkyl-mercapto - alkyl, amino - alkyl, mono - or dialkoxy carbonyl alkyl, or 2-(5-methyl-2-oxotetrahydro - fur - 3 - yl - thio (methyl) phosphinothioyloxy) - ethyl or 3 - (5 - methyl - 2- oxo - tetrahydro - fur - 3 - yl - thio (methyl) phosphinothioyloxy) - propyl, are prepared by reacting an appropriate phosphorous acid amide, phosphorous acid or salt thereof with a halolactone, any hydrogen halide formed being removed as it is produced, or by reacting a mercapto derivative of the lactone with an appropriate pentavalent phosphorous halidate. The lactones have pesticidal properties. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 986,798.
