Titanium dioxide is prepared by reacting titanium tetrachloride with a free-oxygen containing gas at a temperature above 800‹ C. in the presence of between 0À05 and 5À0% of titanium tetrabromide by weight of the titanium tetrachloride, auxiliary heat being provided by burning a fuel gas such as carbon monoxide with a free-oxygen containing gas. The free-oxygen containing gas may be oxygen or oxygen-enriched air. Any conventional metaloxides producing reaction chamber can be used. In an example, oxygen and carbon monoxide are introduced separately into a conventional corrosion resistant reactor. The mixture ignites in the reaction zone and together with electrical heating heats the reactor to 900‹ C. Titanium tetrachloride vapour at about 180‹ C. containing titanium tetrabromide and additional oxygen are charged into the reaction zone through separate inlets. Pigmentary titanium dioxide particles having uniform average particle diameter between 200 and 400 millimicrons and free from contaminants are produced.
