Abstract
1,140,647. Copolymerizing olefins. MITSUBISHI PETROCHEMICAL CO. Ltd. 22 Sept., 1967 [24 Sept., 1966], No. 43301/67. Heading C3P. Flexible olefin copolymers having an ethylene content of from 70 to 95% by weight are made by copolymerizing ethylene with another alpha-olefin in a solvent which is benzene or an alkyl benzene containing 1 to 4, C1 to 4, alkyl groups, in the presence of a catalyst comprising a compound of the general formula Al 2 R 3 X 3 where R represents a hydrocarbon residue and X a halogen, and a vanadium compound of the general formula VOX 3 where X represents halogen, e.g. VOCl 3 . Preferred Al compounds are Al 2 (C 2 H 5 ) 3 Cl 3 , Al 2 (n-C 3 H 7 ) 3 Cl 3 , and Al 2 (i.C 4 H 9 ) 3 Cl 3 . The alkyl benzene may be toluene, a xylene, ethylbenzene, or isopropyl benzene. Hydrogen may be present during the copolymerization. Exemplified comonomers are propylene and butene-1.
