Abstract
1,140,024. Fluid amplifiers; fluid-pressure servomotor systems. JOHNSON SERVICE CO. Jan. 25, 1966 [Jan. 25, 1965], No. 3348/66. Headings G3H and G3P. A fluid amplifier comprises an impact modulator having aligned opposed nozzles 16, 17, Fig. 2 opening into chambers 21, 23 which are divided by a control orifice 20, preferably having a sharp edge. Ports 22, 24 are provided leading from the chambers one being a reference pressure port and the other an output signal port connected to the input of an amplifier. Input signal restrictors are connected to the nozzles to modulate the streams to both of these nozzles, the output signal being the sum of the modulated signals and a negative feedback being connected from the amplifier output to one of the nozzles. The output of the modulator is preferably passed through cascade amplifiers. Figs. 7-9 (not shown) provide a proportional, integral and differential amplifier or combination of these controls. Fig. 13 shows the amplifier 70, as described above, used in controlling a heating system. Resistors 87, 88, 89, responsive to outside temperature, set point temperature and water pipe temperature, are arranged in parallel to provide inputs to the amplifier 70 which is also connected to a supply through regulator 94 and resistor 93. The output 77 forms the input of cascade amplifiers 71, 72, 73 the resulting output signal being fed to an amplifier 78 to act on a diaphragm 84 which moves a piston member 82, connected to diaphragm 86, to control a flapper 80. The output signal from chamber 81 controls a steam valve 61 and is also fed through a resistor 15 as a feedback to the nozzle 17.
