Abstract

1,140,071. Catalytic reactors. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 17 March, 1966 [24 March, 1965], No. 12492/65. Heading B1F. A cylindrical catalytic reactor is divided into compartments extending the length of the reactor by radial dividing members, and the reactant fluids are fed through the reactor in a direction perpendicular to its length. An internal axial heat exchanger 42 is provided with the catalyst bed arranged around its periphery between inner and outer perforated plates 53 and 51, and with radial dividing members of which members 43 and 47 divide the entire space surrounding the heat exchanger and members 45 and 49 merely divide the catalyst bed. Fluid reactant entering at 59 flows radially outwardly through the first compartment and then radially inwardly through the adjacent compartment until the outlet 61 is reached, as shown by the arrows. The hot gas from the outlet 61 leads to the hot-side of the heat exchanger before passing to a product outlet and heats cold gas passing through the exchanger to the inlet 59 of the reactor.
