A smoke emitting marine flare comprises a buoyant cylinder 1; a closure 2 which acts as a ballast and enables the marker to float upright in water; a smoke generating composition 6 contained in a perforated metal tube 4, wrapped internally by a heat destructible foil 5 of paper or plastic; a concentric cylinder 10 of paper or plastic; a primed cambric disc 7 secured by a perforated disc 8; a delay fuze 20; a smoke outlet 14 sealed in the top cap 24 and obturated with a removable plug 15; and a percussion igniter 17 adapted to be initiated by tension on a pull cord 18. A buoyancy cylinder is formed by the annular volume 13 between the body 1 and the cylinder 10. The whole assembly of the tube 4 and cylinder 10 is held in position with a washer 12 and a spigot 11 engaging a blind bore in a bush 3. The smoke outlet 14, which is formed as a chimney closed at the inner end is provided with smoke inlet holes 25 and serves as a spray trap. On pulling the pull cord 18, a striker mechanism ignites the fuze 20 which in turn ignites the smoke generating composition 6 after a short delay. The resultant pressure built up within the body 1 ejects the plug 15 from the chimney 14 and smoke is emitted. The flare is suitable for discharge from the device described in co-pending Specification 1,140,062.
