Abstract

1,140,041. Sheet forming. L. BOCCHI. 21 Jan., 1966 [21 Jan., 1965], No. 2952/66. Heading B5A. Rims are formed on containers at the same time as they are pressure formed. In the embodiment shown in the Figure, a heat softened sheet a is clamped about a female mould 1 by a ring 18 and is plug assist vacuum/blow formed into the mould 1 by a male die 5, 6. The peripheral region of the sheet is formed simultaneously into a curled rim by a member 10, slidable about die 5, 6, which member is lowered relative to the die so that curved surface 12 engages the sheet and forms the rim. Application of the sheet to the surface 12 is aided by air pressure through channel 23, the air trapped between the sheet and surface 12 being bled to atmosphere through channel 26. In a second embodiment (see Figs. 2, 3 and 4, not shown), the channel 26 is absent and the die member 6 carries a surface (6b) contiguous with surface 12 of member 10. In this embodiment the sheet is applied against both surfaces by air pressure from passage 23 and surface 12 then forwarded relative to surface (6b) in order to complete the curling. In a third embodiment (see Figs. 5, 6 and 7, not shown) the female mould carries an upwardly curved peripheral surface which co-operates with the downwardly curved surface 12 of member 10 the sheet being curled therebetween.
