In a keyboard-type musical instrument the sound-producing members or strings are wires or strips 9, Fig. 1, of rectangular or other non- circular cross-section which are bent into U- shapes with unequal legs, the shorter of each of the said legs being secured by means of a conical plug 14 in a support block 13. A hammer 6 rises when a key 2 is depressed and strikes the longer leg of a string 9, the plane of its movement not being parallel to an axis of symmetry of the cross-section of the string, so that if the said cross-section is rectangular the string 9 will be struck edgewise (Fig. 3). The keys 2 are provided with dampers 12 and lifters 4, the latter co-operating with release means 5 on the hammers 6. The support block 13 is mounted on a frame 7 and also carries movable microphones 10 disposed between the strings 9. In another embodiment (Fig. 2 not shown), the microphones are movable by a pedal 15 and another pedal 16 is operated to remove sound dampers 17 from the strings 9.
