Abstract

<PICT:1039762/C1/1> Zinc oxide is produced by burning a continuous supply of Zn vapour using a continuous supply of free O2-containing gas, drawing off the hot gas/ZnO suspension and recycling a proportion of it to provide nuclei for further grain growth. The O2-containing gas, e.g. air, enters refractory-lined chamber 2 via inlet 3, at a rate controlled by damper 3a, along with Zn vapour, which enters from supply vessel 1 via inlet 1a. Fan 4a draws the products through outlet 4 to bag filter 5, except for a proportion which passes over valve 6a to inlets 6 and 3. A secondary air supply from inlets 7 and 8 keeps the larger particle size oxide in suspension in the duct leading to 4a. Aperture 9 is provided for cleaning purposes. The rate of Zn vapour supply and of the primary air supply, the proportion of ZnO/air suspension recycled in the air supply, the temperature in the combustion chamber and the retention time therein are adjusted to give ZnO of mean particle size within the range, say, 0.1 to 0.7m .
