Abstract
1,039,224. Microwave heating apparatus. ELLIOTT ELECTRONIC TUBES Ltd. March 18, 1964 [March 27, 1963], No. 12052/63. Heading H5H. Laminar material 51, e.g. paper, is heated by conveying it on a plate 52 past a member 53 which is connected to a microwave energy source, at the resonant frequency of the member, by a coaxial feeder or waveguide, the plate 52 being earthed. The arrangement relies on strip line conduction, a travelling wave field being established between the members 52, 53 which are of non-magnetic electrically-conducting metal. The field may be made monotonic by using a matched load at the end of members 52, 53 instead of an open or short-circuit. Member 52 may be replaced by a roller 54, Fig. 2 (not shown), and member 53 by a generally U-shaped waveguide 55, which opens out on the strip 51 and has a ridge 55b projecting from its base for concentrating the energy, Fig. 3 (not shown). Members 52, 54 may be replaced by metal strip or foil.
