Abstract
1,039,101. Non-frictional brakes; spring mechanisms. TELEFLEX PRODUCTS Ltd. Jan. 25, 1963 [Jan. 25, 1962], No. 2857/62. Addition to 888,210. Headings F2E and F2S. [Also in Division A3] An inertia reel comprises a shaft with an abutment face, an inertia member mounted to rotate and slide inwardly of the shaft, cam means between an abutment face on the inertia member and the abutment face on the shaft so that at a predetermined acceleration the inertia member moves inwardly against a resistance and locking means on the inertia member engages fixed co-operating means. The shaft 28 supports a strap tunnel 4 and an end flange 30 on a boss 6 on one end of the shaft. The flange has three recesses shallower at one end and the inertia member 44 slidable and rotatable on the shaft has three complementary recesses shallower at the opposite end. A spring 52 on the shaft urges the inertia member towards the flange so that balls 50 engage in the recesses. The strap tunnel supports bosses 6 and bearing plates 12 engage over the bosses and have a series of hemispherical protuberances 22. On a sudden pull being given to the strap the inertia member lags on the flange 30 and the balls 50 are moved by the shape of the recesses and force the inertia member to slide so that the protuberances 22 on the fixed bearing plate 12 engage recesses in the inertia member and arrest rotation of the shaft. The shaft also supports a boss 24 and a spring 56 is anchored in an end cap 36 and to the shaft. The end caps have bolts for securing the reel to mounting plates. In an alternative form, braking of the reel is effected by interengaging teeth on the inertia member and fixed bearing plate which is solid and fits over the shaft which is shaped to receive a pin for the strap.
