Abstract

In manufacture of a three-gun, shadow-mask colour picture tube having a rectangular faceplate panel with side walls to be joined to a funnel portion of the tube, the funnel is clamped for grinding the edge of its forward section within a given distance of a yoke reference plane and perpendicular to its central axis and is aligned with and joined to a neck portion of the tube; the faceplate panel is recontoured on a mould and provided with shadow mask mounting studs indexed with respect to the contour of the panel face; the faceplate is clamped for grinding the edge of its side walls at a given distance from the panel face and the studs; a multi-dot phosphor screen is formed on the faceplate panel which is indexed on a light exposure device with reference to the ground panel edge plane and panel sidewalls; the funnel and faceplate panel are aligned and their ground edges are frit-sealed together; and the gun structure is sealed in the tube neck at a given distance from the yoke reference plane and with the faceplate panel indexed as it was during the screenforming process. Clamping and indexing jigs for the above manufacturing steps are described in detail. The tube panel, funnel and neck may be of lead-barium glass and of a kind available for black and white tube manufacture.
