A gaseous fuel cell especially suitable for use with carbonaceous gases utilizes as electrolyte an aqueous solution of caesium and/or rubidium hydroxide, carbonate and/or bicarbonate between and in direct contact with a pair of gaspermeable conductive electrodes. The electrode catalyst metals may be bonded with P.T.F.E.
