Abstract

Lubricants, hydraulic fluids and greases comprise a major proportion of a mixture of an oleaginous fluid and a tridimensionally swellable and at least partly cross-linked polymer or copolymer of one or more specified olefinically unsaturated monomers, the polymer being in the form of particles of average size less than 0.1 mm., and being cross-linked to such an extent that the maximum swellability thereof in the fluid at ambient temperature is at least 1 and the swellability reversibly increases with the rise of temperature. Suitable cross-linking agents are listed. The oleaginous fluid may be an aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic oil, a fat, an ester of a fatty acid or polycarboxylic acid, a polyether, or a silicone oil. Optional additives include soaps, graphite and molybdenum sulphide.ALSO:Cross-linked polystyrene is prepared (1) by pearl (emulsion) polymerization using butane-diol dimethacrylate as the cross-linking agent, benzoyl peroxide as the catalyst, a secondary alkyl sulphate as wetting agent, and a copolymer of sodium methacrylate and methyl methacrylate as emulsifier, and (2) by emulsion polymerization using glycol dimethacrylate as the cross-linking agent, potassium persulphate as catalyst, sodium bicarbonate, and ammonium stearate as emulsifier. Cross-linked poly-nonyl methacrylate is prepared by emulsion polymerization using glycol dimethacrylate as the cross-linking agent, a potassium persulphate as catalyst, sodium bicarbonate and sodium stearate as emulsifier.
