1,038,125. Coating-apparatus. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO. Ltd. and L. MAWBEY. May 6, 1963 [May 8,1962], No. 17580/62. Heading B2B. Apparatus for applying adhesive to a succession of workpieces comprises a chamber supplied with liquid adhesive composition, a generally cylindrical roll which in the operation of the apparatus rotates about its axis with its cylindrical curved surface in contact with adhesive in the chamber and which comprises a recess formed in its cylindrical curved surface extending parallel to the axis, and an adhesive applying blade which extends generally parallel to the axis and which is arranged to move through the recess transversely to the length thereof to pick up adhesive therefrom and then to apply the adhesive to a workpiece. As described with reference to a paper bag making machine, a rod of thermoplastic adhesive is fed into the apparatus where it is melted, the molten adhesive being conveyed to a chamber 4 and thence to the surface of a roll 6 having three radially equally spaced recesses 42 extending the length of the roll parallel to its axis. A bar 46 acts as doctor, wiping the surface of the roll clean while leaving adhesive in the recesses. The gearing is such that applying blade 12 in each rotation about axis 14 enters one of the recesses 42 and sweeps out the adhesive which is then applied to a bag blank.
