Abstract
Epoxides are obtained by oxidizing an olefinically unsaturated compound with molecular oxygen in a liquid reaction medium comprising at least 25% by weight of at least one of: (i) acetone; (ii) acetic esters CH3COOCR3; (iii) boric esters <FORM:1038182/C2/1> (iv) carbonic esters R3CO.COOCR3 or <FORM:1038182/C2/2> and (v) benzoic esters PhCOOCR13, where each R is hydrogen, straight-chain alkyl or haloalkyl of 1-3 C, or straight-chain alkyl or haloalkyl of 2 or 3 C substituted on a non-terminal carbon atom by one or more alkyl or haloalkyl of 1-3 C [provided that the carbon atom to which the R's are attached bears not more than one CH2 group (not counting CH3)], and each R1 is hydrogen, straight-chain alkyl or haloalkyl of 1-4 C, or straight-chain alkyl or haloalkyl of 2-4 C substituted on a non-terminal carbon atom by at least one straight- or branched-chain alkyl or haloalkyl of 1-4 C. Many individual solvents are specified. Metal-containing catalysts may be present, as well as inert diluents. Examples epoxidize propylene, ethylene, 2-methyl-2-butene, styrene, butadiene, cyclohexene, propylene trimer, vinyl cyclohexene, isobutylene and soybean oil. Other starting materials are listed, including polymers, hydrocarbons, halohydrocarbons, alcohols, ethers, ketones, acids, esters, amides, imides, nitriles and phosphorus esters. Boric esters above may be prepared by reacting boric acid with appropriate alcohols or glycols.
