Abstract
1,038,161. Valves. NAKSKOV SKIBSVAERFT A.B. Feb. 6, 1963, No. 4910/63. Heading F2V. A valve member intended for shipboard operation in fuel or ballast pumping or bilge suction is operatively connected with a reciprocable hollow cylinder to the interior of which pressure fluid is supplied to open the valve against the pressure of a valve closing spring. A substantially pressure balanced closure member 16, having frusto-conical faces 17 upon frusto-conical seats 19, obturates the passage between inlet 12 and outlet 14 under the closing force of a spring 22 acting from flange 32 upon cylinder 18 to which is fixed valve stem 20. The valve is opened by pressure fluid admitted via inlets 24 and 28 to the interior of cylinder 18 which is thereby forced to slide upon cylinder 26 against the action of the spring 22. In a further embodiment (Fig. 2, not shown) obturation between ports 44 and 46 is effected by cylindrical member 50 joined by webs 70, 72 &c. to stem 20 connected to a cylinder 18 operating against spring 22 contained within an interior housing 48 joined to exterior housing 42 by webs. Valve member 50 seats against synthetic rubber sealing ring 66 carried upon the lower seat and carries a similar sealing ring 84 to seal against the annular seating ring 68 retained by set screw 80 in sealing engagement against synthetic rubber sealing ring 82 within the tubular portion 64 of port 44. A valve setting mark 94 upon member 50 is visible through an aperture 90 normally closed by member 92. The valve may be tested in the closed position by supplying pressure fluid through a similar aperture 96 and observing for leaks through aperture 90. The interior of the housing 48 may be supplied with fluid via passage 88 to protect the spring 22 against corrosion. Impurities and slurry within the cylinder 78 are drawn off through fluid inlet 52 via the pipe 86. A packing 76 is provided around the cylinder 18 with a scraper ring 78 to prevent impurities entering the housing 48. In a further embodiment (Fig. 5, not shown) spaced apart coaxial inlet and outlets are each simultaneously obturated in a manner similar to the Fig. 2 embodiment by members carried upon cylinders operated in opposite directions on the same axis.
