Abstract
A lightweight material having a bulk density not greater than 25 lbs. per cu. ft. consists of a lightly packed mass of acicular CaSO4 crystals, and is prepared by cooling a solution of CaSO4 in a solvent in which solubility decreases with decrease in temperature and from which large (1 mm. in length or more) acicular crystals are formed and separating the crystals so formed. A mineral acid (e.g. 15% H2SO4 or 10% HCl) is a suitable solvent. The starting material may be gypsum. The hot saturated CaSO4 may be prepared at 90 DEG C. and slowly cooled (up to 25 DEG C. per hour) to precipitate crystals, gentle agitation may be applied. The crystals may be freed from solvent and a shaped mass obtained by lightly pressing in a mould. An adhesive (e.g. an animal glue) may be applied to improve the dimensional stability of the shape.
