Abstract

Tetrahydrophthalic anhydride is prepared in a continuous process by reacting maleic anhydride and butadiene in a molten state or dissolved in an organic solvent in a molar ratio of 1:1 to 1:1.3 and maintaining the reactants in continuous intimate contact for a reaction period sufficient for substantially the whole of the butadiene to be absorbed. The reactants may pass in uniflow through a tower fitted with Raschig rings.
