Abstract
1,037,468. Ammunition. ATLAS CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Inc. Oct. 2, 1964 [Oct. 3, 1963; May 4, 1964], No. 40343/64. Heading F3A. An electric igniting match is formed by a pair of trapezoidal metal tabs 11, 13, Fig. 2, to which conducting wires 17, 19 are soldered whilst a layer 12 of non-conducting material 12, e.g. fibre, asbestos or ceramic separates the tabs and a high-resistance bridge-wire 23 connects the tabs at the ends remote from the wires 17, 19; a match composition is moulded around the bridge wire. The composition includes, e.g. cuprous acetylide, diazodinitrophenol, lead mononitroresorcinate, a mixture of the latter and potassium chlorate, and silver or lead azides which are suspended in a lacquer, such as nitrocellulose. A semi-conductive element 29 also inter-connects the tabs 11, 13 and extends through the non-conducting material 12, which element is made of finely divided metal, e.g. aluminium, copper, lead or iron suspended in a matrix of high melting-point natural or synthetic wax; the wax may be replaced by polyethylene. An explosion initiator employing the above match consists of a copper, brass or aluminium shell 30, Fig. 3, with a base change 31 of pentaerythritol tetranitrate or tetryl, and a primer 33 of mannital hexanitrate or diazodinitrophenol above which is the match in a chamber lined 35 with paper, cardboard or plastic. The wires 17, 19 exit via a plug 37 of rubber or plastic. A delay element with a delay powder train may be interposed between the match and the primer: the delay train may comprise a powdered mixture of zirconium-nickel alloy and red lead. Any difference of high potential between the wires passes through the element 29 rather than the bridge wire 23 whilst any high potential on the wires is discharged to the the shell 30. When exposed to elevated temperature upon electric arcing in the initiator the element 29 partially meets and provides a low-resistance path between the wires.
