Abstract

Lubricants for metal-forming operations are esters of C10- 22 fatty acids substituted in the acyl chain with oxyalkylene radicals having at least 2 oxyalkylene groups, each oxyalkylene radical being adjacent to a hydroxy group or to another such oxyalkylene radical, each alkylene containing 2-4 carbon atoms (see Division C2). In Example I, aqueous solutions of the reaction product of epoxidized soybean oil with ethoxylated nonyl phenol are stated to be of value as a lubricant at a metal-metal interface.ALSO:The invention comprises esters of C10- 22 fatty acids, the acyl chain being substituted with oxyalkylene radicals having at least two oxyalkylene groups, each oxyalkylene radical being adjacent to a hydroxy group or to another such oxyalkylene radical, each alkylene containing 2-4 carbon atoms; and their production by reacting an epoxidized ester with an oxyalkylene ether or ester in the presence of a strong Lewis acid or a tertiary amine (or with a polyoxyalkylene glycol). Preferred starting materials are epoxidized triglycerides; other esters, including esters of polyhydric alcohols, are specified.ALSO:The invention comprises esters of C10- 22 fatty acids, the acyl chain being substituted with oxyalkylene radicals having at least 2, e.g. 2-200, oxyalkylene groups, each oxyalkylene radical being adjacent to a hydroxy group or to another such oxyalkylene radical, each alkylene containing 2-4 carbon atoms; and their production by reacting an epoxidized fatty ester with an oxyalkylene ether or ester in the presence of a strong Lewis acid or a tertiary amine (or with a polyoxyalkylene glycol). Specified reactants include alkylphenol - polyoxyalkylene glycol adducts.ALSO:Emulsifying systems comprise an ester of C10-22 fatty acid substituted in the acyl chain with oxyalkylene radicals having at least 2 oxyalkylene groups, each oxyalkylene radical being adjacent to a hydroxy group or to another such oxyalkylene radical, each alkylene containing 2-4 carbon atoms (see Division C2); together with an anionic emulsifier, e.g. a salt of an alkyl, aryl or alkaryl sulphonic acid, a mono- or diester of orthophosphoric acid, or a mono- or diester of sulphuric acid, e.g. salts of Ca, Ba, Mg, Sr, Be, Zn, Al, Cr and amines. The material emulsified may be an organic oil-soluble pesticide. Examples refer to the emulsification of mineral oil and a mixture of castor oil and unsaturated fatty acids.
