Abstract

1, 033, 741. Hypodermic probe for measuring blood flow. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. July 20, 1964 [July 18, 1963], No. 28540/63. Heading A5K. [Also in Division G1] A device for measuring flow of fluids e.g. body fluids comprises a pair of temperature sensitive resistance elements mounted on opposite sides of a probe insertable in a fluid channel and separated by an obstacle, whereby when the elements are aligned with the fluid flow and supplied with equal heating currents a temperature difference is set up therebetween dependent on flow rate, which is measurable by out of balance of a bridge in two of whose arms the elements are connected. A hypodermic probe (Fig. 1) comprises a hollow needle insertable in a blood vessel 2 and carrying temperature sensitive symmetrical resistance elements e.g. thermistors or silicon semi-conductors S 1 S 2 on opposite sides of a mica strip mounted on the needle tip, and disposed to lie across the direction of bloodflow (Fig. 2 not shown). The elements are connected through the needle to an A.C. energized bridge (Fig. 3 not shown) completed by equal resistors. The elements assume differing temperatures with consequent bridge unbalance indicated by a detector calibrated to show direction and rate of blood flow.
