Abstract

1,033,085. Purifying exhaust gases. MOLBROS, Ltd. Aug. 15, 1963 [Sept. 25, 1962], No. 36346/62. Heading FIB. [Also in Division B2] An electrostatic separator for the exhaust gases of an I.C. engine is adapted to be operated from the electrical ignition system of the engine and may be positioned before or after the silencer. As shown, the dirty exhaust from a vehicle enters tangentially through an inlet 12 of a cyclone chamber 10 and the cleaned exhaust leaves through an outlet 14. One or more discharge electrode wires 22 of nickel chrome material and 0À010 in. diameter are welded to the terminals 18 at the top of the chamber and to a single terminal 20 at the bottom which can be rotated and secured by a nut for tensioning the wires. Current is supplied to the wire 22 via the terminals 18 from the distributer 24 of the engine. Charged particles in the exhaust are separated out on to the earthed wall of the chamber and then discharged through an outlet 15 on to the road over which the vehicle is travelling.
