Abstract
A mixture of an aliphatic conjugated diene and at least 20% by weight of the total monomer content of a hydroxyalkyl ester of acrylic or an a -substituted acrylic acid, optionally with a third ethylenically unsaturated compound, are copolymerized in aqueous emulsion to form a stable latex. Conventional polymerization techniques are used. In the examples, butadiene is copolymerized with hydroxyethyl, -propyl, and -butyl acrylate and methacrylate. The additional monomers exemplified are acrylonitrile, methacrylic acid, styrene, and methacrylamide. The polymers are cross-linkable by heat alone or by chemical reaction. The third comonomer may be one having a cross-linking action-such as divinyl benzene and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate.
