Abstract

Colourless fibre-spinning solutions are made by polymerizing monomeric material containing at least 80% by weight of acrylonitrile in a solvent containing at least a major proportion of dimethyl sulphoxide and in the presence of a redox system consisting of formamidine sulphinic acid or a salt or derivative thereof and an organic or inorganic peroxide, the unreacted monomers being removed at the end of the reaction. Comonomers specified for use with the acrylonitrile are acrylic and methacrylic acids, esters and amides and vinyl pyridine. The examples describe copolymerizing, with gradual addition of monomers, solvent and catalyst, acrylonitrile and methyl acrylate, with methacrylic acid as an optional third monomer.
