Abstract

Bromine derivatives of bis-(hydroxyphenyl)-dialkylmethanes with more than 3 bromine atoms are prepared by passing bromine at 10 DEG to 100 DEG C. into a liquid mixture containing the above starting compound, an organic liquid solvent and at least 10% by weight of the mixture of water, the organic liquid solvent being a neutral benzene compound, methyl bromide, a chlorinated and/or brominated aliphatic hydrocarbon having at least two carbon atoms per molecule or mixtures thereof. Specified solvents are benzene, ethyl, propyl and butyl bromides, ethylene dibromide and ethylene di-chloride. The examples describe the preparation of bis-(3,5-dibromo-4-hydroxyphenyl)-dimethylmethane.
