A pick-up stick comprises a long handle 1 with a hand-grip 3 at one end and a pair of thin spring tongues 20 extending from the other end, a lever 7 pivoted to the handle, a pair of toggle links 22 connecting the spring tongues and a rod, wire or other connection between the common pivot of the links 22 and the lever. The spring tongues 20 are formed by a single length of wire secured to a cross-bar 16 provided with a ferrule 17 secured to the end of the stem or they may be formed separately with one end of each riveted to a short riveted crossbar. The toggle links extend through slots in the tongues and are pivotally secured by pins 22A extending from the links to each side of the slots to the outside of the tongues. The lever 7 is formed by a length of stiff wire bent into a loop with the ends turned out and engaged in holes in the arms of a bracket 4. In a modification the hand-grip extends at an obtuse angle to the stem 2, the lever being formed of a double length of stiff wire, the ends being splayed in for pivotal connection with the hand-grip and the lever being bent to provide a finger grip portion lying near to but spaced from the hand grip. In another modification, for picking up hot objects, an asbestos strip is stuck to the inner face of each of the finger portions of the spring tongues.
