Abstract

1,030,861. Hypodermic injection appliances. BOOTS PURE DRUG CO. Ltd. June 4,1962 [March 2,1961], No. 7752/61. Heading A5R. An ampoule comprises a collapsible container 1 to which a needle mount is secured, a passage 6 through the needle mount being sealed by a pierceable diaphragm 7, and a detachable needle or stylet having a surrounding collar 12 which is longitudinally displaceable relative to the needle mount to pierce the diaphragm, the collar and the needle mount having locating and retaining means which permits the piercing movement of the needle or stylet. The finger hold 2, which is made of polythene or polystyrene, is sealed to the ampoule 1 and is integral with the needle mount which has external recesses 4, 5. A double-pointed needle or a diaphragm-piercing stylet is fixed in a collar 12 having an internal projection 13 which selectively engages one of the recesses in the needle mount to secure the collar in a position in which the diaphragm is not pierced or a position in which the diaphragm is pierced. The ampoule is filled through a base 9 which is subsequently covered by a disc 10. Alternatively, the collar may have one or two external recesses or projections which engage one or two recesses in or projections from the surface of the needle mount passage. A conventional hypodermic needle may be fitted over the mount after the diaphragm has been pierced by the stylet. The ampoule is made of polythene which may be coated with a gas-impermeable film or enclosed in a container of inert gas, e.g. nitrogen. The ampoule is packed in a polythene envelope which is permeable to sterilising gases, e.g. ethylene oxide. A hypodermic syringe may be filled from the ampoule.
