A varifocal objective consists of a basic objective V and a varifocal group formed from a positive fixed component I of focal length f I , a negative movable component II of focal length f II , a negative movable component III of focal length f III and a positive fixed component IV of focal length f IV wherein The varifocal group may be replaced by a fixed focus group consisting of a negative front member and positive rear member, the members either being simple lens elements, L 14 , L 15 , Fig. 2, not shown or cemented members L 16 -L 19 , Fig. 3, not shown. Optical data are provided for the varifocal objective of Fig. 1, and the two fixed focus modifications of Figs. 2 and 3.
