Abstract

1,030,079. Web winding arrangements. WEST VIRGINIA PULP and PAPER CO. Dec. 3, 1964, No. 49276/64. Heading B6B. [Also in Division D2] The coefficient of hygroexpansivity-i.e. the change in length per unit per percentage change in relative humidity x 10<SP>5</SP>- of paper or paperboard is decreased by passing the paper web before final drying around successive bowed rolls in tandem, the web initially contacting the inner concave surface of each roll and passing around the roll to the outer convex surface to cause the web thereby to stretch laterally. Each edge of the web is gripped at each bowed roll to prevent lateral slippage of the web by belts 40 mounted on pulleys 35, 36 on bracket 38, and on pulley 37 mounted on tension arm 39. The bracket 38 is supported on the end of shaft 30 of the bowed roll 22 and has slot 66 for the supporting screw enabling the bracket to be adjusted towards roll 22. More than two bowed rolls may be used. The bowed rolls are situated between dryer rolls and before or after a size press. The rolls may be bowed to a greater extent at the ends than in the middle. This treatment not only decreases the coefficient in the cross-direction but also in the machine direction, and also increases the stiffness of the paper.
