[Also in Division B1] A transition piece for use in bonding dissimilar materials, e.g. metals, cements or ceramics, is made by a method involving the melting down by an arc or electron beam of a rod of variable composition. The transition piece has a coefficient of expansion which changes along its length in a manner which in a graph is shown by a line of S-shape. The rod may be made by mixing powder alloys A and B, Fig. 5, or their powdered constituents fed from hoppers 1 and 2 under the control of valves 5, 6 regulated by a moving cam 10 to produce a mixture in a container 13 varied in a manner to produce a number of transition pieces. The powder in the container 13 is in a rubber tube 12 which is subjected to hydrostatic pressure to produce a compact which is vacuum sintered. The sintered rod is used as an electrode and melted in a vacuum arc furnace to produce an ingot. The melting may bo repeated and the subsequent ingot is extruded, forged or rolled to produce a transition piece in the form of a tube, rod or sheet. In a modification, the rod to be melted is produced from a series of discs of varying composition or from two members of the alloys A and B jouned together and shaped as shown in Fig. 9. Numerous compositions are specified.
