Abstract
1,029,580. Drying webs. HUPP CORPORATION. Sept. 24, 1963 [Oct. 17, 1962], No. 37508/63. Heading F4G. [Also in Division D1] Web heating or drying apparatus comprises guide rollers 20-26 and 23-27 in two spacedapart parallel rows and so arranged that a web 10 trained alternatively over successive rollers extends in a plurality of parallel spaced-apart runs, radiant heaters 32 and 36 parallel to and between each pair of adjacent runs and means for scouring evolved vapour from adjacent the web as it moves through the heating apparatus and exhausting the vapour. The latter means including means for forcing high velocity streams of fluid from adjacent the rows of rollers between one side of each radiant heater and the adjacent run at one end of the heater and in opposite directions along successive heaters, means at the end of each heater opposite that at which the fluid is introduced for reversing the flow of fluid and directing it between the opposite side of said heater and the run adjacent thereto, and means for exhausting the fluid and the evolved vapour from the heating apparatus at the same end of the heater at which it is introduced. In Fig. 1, gas is circulated from upper and lower ventilating units 50, 51 connected to inlet plenums 58, 62, 66 and 118, 122, 126, 130 respectively the gases being exhausted through suitable outlet plenums 74, 76, 78 and 134, 136, 138 and 140 to outlet ducts 70 and 144. Suitable blowers draw in gas, e.g. from atmosphere or from a source of suitable inert gas or from products of combustion from high temperature gas-fired radiators, and if the gas is not already at the required temperature it can be passed through the heaters before entering the inlet ducts.
