Abstract

An alpha-beta-ethylenically unsaturated aldehyde is polymerized with or without a comonomer in a mixture of water and a hetone in the presence of a Redox catalyst to give a polymer having a molecular weight of from 5000 to 7500 and an aldehyde function of more than 85%. The polymerization is preferably conducted in an inert atmosphere. Water-soluble derivatives of these polymers are obtained by suspending the polymer in an aqueous solution containing a substance which releases sulphur-dioxide when heated. The water-soluble derivatives may be mixed with an aqueous dispersion of starch, and act as an insolubilizing agent for the starch. The pH of the solution is neutral or alkaline and the solution preferably contains 1% to 50% by weight of starch and 0.01 to 10% by weight of the water-soluble derivative. Conventional additives, e.g. fillers such as clay, pigments, resins, dyes, stabilizers and plasticizers may be added.
