Abstract

<PICT:1029172/C3/1> In a process for the polymerization of ethylene, wherein a reaction mixture is subjected to recurrent flow pulses, a degree of fouling factor is derived and the interval between flow pulses controlled accordingly. As shown, a mixture of ethylene and initiator is fed via line 11 to a preheating zone 12 and a reaction zone 10a of an elongated tube reactor 10. The polymer formed and unreacted ethylene are cooled on a zone 13 and discharged through a pressure control valve 14. The reactor 10 is provided with pressurized water to jackets 9a-9c. During polymerization, a polymer build-up occurs in the tube 10 with consequent variation of flow-rate, reactor heat transfer rate and product quantity. The extent of the build-up is determined by a thermocouple 18 in a critical section of the reactor where the reactor temperature is above 400 DEG F. The thermocouple is connected through a temperature controller 20 to a computer 22 carrying out the integration of temperature against time in accordance with a predetermined equation during a sudden reduction of the pressure in the reactor caused by opening an outlet valve 14 through a valve position control 38. The pressure reduction is maintained for a predetermined period and followed by the closure of valve 14 and the restoration of the pressure in the reactor to a steady state valve at which it is controlled by a pressure controller 36 responsive to the difference between the reactor pressure, as sensed by a strain-gauge 24 and a preset value from a comparator 40. The cycle of operations is controlled by a timer 26 actuating a selector switch 28 and the period between pressure reductions is adjusted by the computer 22 so that with an increase of the integrated temperature value between cycles the period is increased and vice versa. When the adjustment is unsuccessful the succeeding periods become too short and an alarm is triggered so that the operator shuts down the plant and cleans it with a solvent. In a modification, the integrated temperature value controls the reduction in reactor pressure. In a further modification a plurality of thermocouples and commuters are employed and control the timer through a selector responsive to the highest integrated temperature value.
